Best Online Brokers

Barrons always has the best and most comprehensive broker reviews. This year's review is no exception. Besides the overall ranking, they have further added new rankings for specific trading styles based on 'Buy and Hold', 'Frequent Traders' , 'Option Traders' and 'International Traders'. Here are the top 3 based on the overall ranking and some of my comments.

1. Tradestation Securities
One of the most complete trading software solutions. Their software trading platform is continuously upgraded and fine turned. The platform offers an industry wide recognized scripting language: EasyLanguage. Powerful language that allows from programming custom indicators to running automated trading strategies. Downside is there is no web based trading and there is a software fee to boot (wavied if you meet trading activity requirements).

2. thinkorswim
Great firm and superior trading software. Offers many user-friendly and useful tools. Constant innovations keeps them ahead of the curve. Option traders should seriously consider this firm. Platform offers Excel connectivity. Downside is the commission which can be a tad expensive. Can negotiate if you do volume.

3. Interactive Brokers
Another outstanding broker offering a superior range of products and robust trading software. Retail commissions are among the lowest in the market. Geared for traders who are more market savvy and requires less 'hand-holding' from their broker. Platform offers API connectivity via Excel, Java, C++ and VB. Downside issues include data-streaming, charts and option analysis tools could be better.
